“Killing Me Softly with His Song” is a song composed by Charles Fox with lyrics by Norman Gimbel and is originally sung by Lori Lieberman. Among all the versions of this song, the one of Roberta Flack is definitely the most famous. Released in January 1973, it topped the Billboard Hot 100 in a total of five non-consecutive weeks in February and March. It won Grammys in 1974 for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal. In 1999, Flack’s version was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. It ranked No. 360 on Rolling Stone’s list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and No. 82 on Billboard’s Greatest Songs of All Time.
Roberta Flack is an American singer and is hailed as one of the greatest songstresses of this age. Her songs traverse a broad musical landscape from pop to soul to folk to jazz. She is the only solo artist to win the Grammy Award for Record of the Year for two consecutive years: “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” won at the 1973 Grammys as did “Killing Me Softly with His Song” in 1974. “Killing Me Softly with His Song” has been performed by many household Chinese singers, such as Teresa Teng, Cheng Fangyuan, Karen Mok, and Coco Li. It became a hit in China when British singer Jessie J sang it in the Chinese TV show “I Am a Singer 2018”, beating all the other performances on that day.
