Finland is perhaps the most beautiful and mysterious of the countries of northern Europe. Two-thirds of its surface is covered with thick forests and among them lie lakes, connected with rivers and canals. The northern part of this country is inside the Arctic, where almost no trees can grow because of its cold weather and the people use their deer for transport, clothing and food.
The Finnish history began in the Middle Ages. In about 1155,Finland was conquered by its western neighboring Sweden. After a period of rule by Denmark in the 14th century, the Swedes won back independence and power in 1523 under their brave king. During the Napoleonic Wars (1814-1818)Finland was passed finally from Sweden to Russia .The opportunity came in 1917,when the Russian Revolution brought foreign rule of Finland to an end. Shortly after Soviet Russia made peace with Germany,1919 saw the founding of the Finnish Republic.
The years between the First and Second World Wars were years of progress and growing development. Finland has no coal or oil, and the nation‘s wealth lies in the timber from its forests, which supplies material for paper and furniture making, and in the electric power from its water.

III. Reading Comprehension
Education is not an end, but a means to an end. In other words, we do not educate children only for the purpose of educating them. Our purpose is to fit them for life.
In some modern countries it has for some time been fashionable to think that by free education for all-whether rich or poor, clever or stupid-one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough; we find in such countries a far larger number of people with university degrees, they refuse to do what they think “low”work, and ,in fact ,work with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries .But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor, we can live without education, but we die if we have no food. If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses, we should get terrible diseases in our towns….
In fact ,when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life, it means that we must be educated in such a way that, firstly, each of us can do whatever work suited to his brains and ability and ,secondly, that we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society , and that it is very bad to be ashamed of one's work .Only such a type of education can be considered valuable to society.
1. The writer of this passage thinks that----------.

V. Reading Comprehension
Fear or Welcome
Life is difficult.
It is a great truth because once we truly understand and accept it, then life is no longer difficult.
Most do not fully see this truth. Instead they complain about their problem and difficulties as if life should be easy. It seems to them that their difficulties represent a special kind of suffering especially forced upon them or else upon their families ,their class, or even their nation.
What makes life difficult is that the process of facing and solving problems is a painful one. Problems, depending on their nature, cause in us sadness or loneliness or regret or fear. These are uncomfortable feelings ,often as painful as any kind of physical pain. And since life causes an endless series of problems, life is always difficult and is full of pain as well as joy.
Yet, it is in this whole process of solving problems that life has its meaning. Problems are the serious test that tells success from failure. When we desire to encourage the growth of the human spirit, we encourage the human ability to solve problems, just as in school we set problems for our children to solve . It is through the pain of meeting and working out problems that we learn. As Benjamin Franklin said,” Those things that hurt, instruct.” It is for this reason that wise people learn not to fear but to welcome the pain of problem.
1. From the passage ,it can be inferred that ____. A. everybody has problems. B. we become stronger by facing and solving the problems if life. C. life is difficult because our problems bring us pain. D. people like to complain about their problems.
2. The writer probably used just one short sentence in the first paragraph to____. A. save space B. persuade readers C. make readers laugh D. get readers’ attention
3. The main idea of paragraph 3 is ____. A. most people feel life is easy. B. the writer feels life is easy. C. the write likes to complain about his problems D. most people complain about how hard their lives are
4. According to the passage ,we give school children difficult problems to solve in order to____. A. encourage them to learn B. teach them to fear the pain of solving problems C. help them learn to deal with pain D. teach them how to respect for problems
5. The saying from Benjamin Franklin “Those things that hurt, instruct.” Suggests that____. A. we do not learn from experience B. we do not learn when we are in pain C. pain teaches us important lessons D. pain cannot be avoided

A Problem Japan Faces
Japan has a problem many other countries would envy-its workforce works too hard . Curing Japanese workers of the disease “workaholism” is providing a difficult job, partly because many of them like work better than anything else ,experts say.
Last month, the Japanese Government passed a law for a 40-hour working week, down from 48 hours , to let people spend time away from the office of factory. But it could be many years before average work hours fall to the new level.
In 1985, Japanese workers worked an average of 2168 hours a year. By comparison, people in Britain worked 1952 hours, the United States 1924, Germany 1659 and France 1643.
Many people feel that if they take a week off, they will lose touch with the business and fall behind other people. So they would rather stay at their desks. It is also considered bad form in many offices to leave before the boss. So workers will sit at their desks pretending to be busy until their boss finally puts on his jacket and heads out the door.

The Boy Brought Up by a She-wolf
As far back as 700BC, man had talked about children being cared for by wolves. Romulus and Remus, the old story twin founders of Rome, were said to have been cared for by wolves. It is believed that when a she-wolf loses her baby, she tries to get a human child to take its place. This idea did not become believable until the late nineteenth century when a French doctor actually found a ten-year-old boy having nothing on walking around in the woods. He didn’t walk upright, could not speak, nor could he relate to people. He only growled and stared at them. Finally the doctor won the boy’s confidence and began to work with him. After many long years of devoted and patient teaching, the doctor was able to get the boy dress, feed himself, recognize and say a number of words, as well as write letters to form words.
